Visit Seattle with O Leary Travel Wexford

Seattle is a great city to spend a few days exploring. Nicknamed ‘The Emerald City’, it’s easy to understand why. The city is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland.

We travelled as a family with a toddler and it had plenty to offer. It’s an easy city to wander around, there is tons of shopping, restaurants, parks, hiking, trees and nearby waterways to enjoy.

There are many attractions to visit in Seattle. We spent time at the Aquarium on Pier 59 by the waterfront, we went up the famous Space Needle, we were very impressed by Chihuly Gardens, we didn’t know what to expect here but the place is well worth a visit the sculptures are gorgeous.

Chihuly Glass Gardens Seattle
Chihuly Gardens

With this international glass center, Dale Chihuly has led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art. His work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. He has been the recipient of many awards, including twelve honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.

One of our favourite attractions was the Museum of Pop Culture or MoPOP. Seattle is known as the birthplace of grunge and this place showcases all the greats. They had exhibitions on Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Prince, there is also a Fantasy World so you could see original costumes and props from the original set of the Wizard of Oz and several other famous movies. They had a Scared to Death exhibit where they had props & costumes from famous horror films and tv shows. We spent hours wondering around all the exhibits, loved it.

The Museum of Pop Culture’s mission is to make creative expression a life-changing force by offering experiences that inspire and connect our communities.

Seattle Space Needle

The Space Needle, Chihuly Gardens & MoPOP are all in the one area and there is a monorail system that runs right through it. Entry to each attraction is around $30 plus. Before we travelled we purchased the Seattle CityPASS. It cost’s around Eur91 each and children 3 and under are free. Its great value for money, we really felt we got our money’s worth.

Pike Place Market Seattle
Pike Place Market

We went to the famous Pike Place Market (Seattle’s original farmers market, established in 1907) on the waterfront, it’s one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers’ markets in the US. The place has great charm and buzz around it, busy busy!! We enjoyed wandering around looking at the different stalls. The fishmongers were fun to watch, especially the infamous fish throwing.

Seattle is known for its coffee culture and has a serious amount of coffee shops. Right by Pike Place Market is the original Starbucks.

Whats Nearby

  • We combined Seattle with Vancouver (2 hours drive approximately).
  • It is also possible to take a 3 hour ferry ride to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and an incredibly pretty city. It is also a great base to explore the abundance of wildlife and nature on offer on Vancouver Island.
  • If you are looking to do a great USA roadtrip, Seattle is a great starting point. The Pacific Coast Highway is possibly one of the most famous drives in the world and is certainly one of the most scenic.
  • It is also possible to combine a visit to Seattle with nearby cities Tacoma and Bellevue which attract tourists with their art museums and international cuisine.

How to Get There

There are direct flights into Seattle with Aer Lingus and Up to 4 times weekly during summer schedule

When to Go

For the best weather I would go from April to September. However, Seattle is far sunnier than its reputation as a rainy city. In fact, Seattle receives less rain than many major U.S. cities including New York and Miami. As a lot of attractions are inside so you could pretty much visit anytime.
